Nintendo DSi with larger screens coming this year for Japan

The Nintendo DSi in its current form is just about to round its first Japanese birthday on coming November 1st, and if Nikkei has anything to say about it, the two-screeners all set for an oncoming growth spurt.

Nintendo DSi with larger screens for JapanAccording to a report from the publication, who has a good track record on Nintendo reports thus far, a new DSi with 4-inch screens (versus 3.25 currently) is coming to the land of the rising sun sometime before this years out.

No other spec differences, the report claims this was in response to older gamers having trouble seeing the action. Itll replace the current model and retail for the same price i.e. ¥18,900 (US $205.50).

Who cares about Ubuntu Edge

No, Im serious. Was there anyone interested in this? Weve seen the Indiegogo campaign to raise $32m for this fall flat, sort of, on its face. I was an Ubuntu fan until it started to get a little bloated around 11.x and it is no longer a distro of choice given its top-heaviness. The prospect of using this on a phone was not particularly exciting.

Does the failure represent an inappropriate use of crowdfunding? By comparison, Mozilla pressed ahead with their OS and now has manufacturers who are selling a device. The only difference here is that they funded their offering themselves and did not attempt to engage directly with those who may have been interested in their product. Perhaps if they had taken the Edge route, they too would have failed to make their target.

Given the overall dominance of Android and the 11000+ devices presently running this OS, and other competitors in the market who have faltered or failed (Micro$oft), what real chance does the Edge now have when you also factor in the apparent lack of interest?

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

While component wise, the Mini 9 is similar to other recent Netbooks, such as the Eee PC 901 and the Acer Aspire One (which all use Intels Atom CPU), in typical Dell fashion, there are more customization options than weve seen other Netbooks. Our test unit arrived with 1GB of RAM, a 16GB solid state hard drive, and Windows XP.

That configuration costs $514 and comes very close to hitting the benchmarks we set out in our "Building the Perfect Netbook" feature, which asked for similar components, but maybe a slightly bigger SSD hard drive and an impulse purchase $499 price tag. You can get the Inspiron Mini 9 down to as low as $349 by opting for a smaller hard drive (4GB or 8GB), 512MB of RAM, an Ubuntu Linux OS, or knocking down the Webcam to a lower resolution option.

Or, add few bucks for the option internal Bluetooth antenna, which wasnt in our build (but is useful for tethering a cell phone for mobile broadband access).

As an interesting note, the Mini 9 apparently includes an inactive internal mobile broadband antenna. According to Dell, it will be announcing the carrier and coverage details in the coming weeks.

Specification :
  • Price as reviewed or Starting price $514 - 349
  • Processor Intel Atom 1.6GHz
  • Memory 1024MB DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz
  • Hard drive 16GB SSD
  • Chipset Intel GMA950
  • Graphics Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset (integrated)
  • Operating system Windows XP Home Edition SP2
  • Dimensions (width by depth) 9.1x6.8 inches
  • Thickness 1.25-1.1 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 8.9 inches
  • System weight, Weight with AC adapter 6.2 - 6.9 pounds
  • Category Netbook
In person, the Mini 9 is similar in design to Asus 9 inch Eee PC. Its slightly thinner, at about 1.25 inches at the back, tapering slightly toward the front. Our system had a glossy black finish (which is very fingerprint prone), and white is also available. Interestingly, most of the leaked product shots weve seen up to now show a red model. The challenge for any Netbook is to squeeze as much keyboard as possible into a very tiny space, and the Mini 9 does a good job with it.

The Dell letter keys are larger than on the 9 inch Eee PC, but certain keys Tab, Caps Lock, and so on are reduced to small slivers. In addition, the entire function key row has been removed. F1 through F10 are now alternate keys of the A to L row. Its an interesting compromise to get the most surface area for everyday typing, but makes some tasks, such as jumping between Web page fields with the Tab key, somewhat awkward.

Opening the lid, the 8.9 inch 1,024x600 pixel screen shares space with a Webcam above and two small speaker grilles below. The display offers just enough space for displaying Web pages and Word documents, and we think the 9 inch size is the perfect fit for Netbooks, rather than the smaller 7 inch or larger 10 inch screens on other systems.

Panasonic SDR SW20

The SW20s major selling point is its sturdy, waterproof body. Its protected down to 5 feet underwater for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time, adhering to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60529 IPX8 standard. Its also dust proof and resists damage if dropped from heights up to 4 feet (using MIL STD 810F method 516.5 for shock testing).

And for all its toughness, the SW20, which records MPEG-2 video at a maximum of 10Mbps to SD or SDHC cards, weighs only slightly more than 8 ounces and measures 1.3 inches wide by 2.5 inches high by 4.5 inches deep.

Its worth noting, too, that Panasonic warns that the water resistant packing degrades over time and recommends that a dealer replace the packing at least once every 18 months.

The SW20s horizontal camcorder design at least when compared with competitor Sanyos pistol grip Xacti VPC-E1 allows for its 10x optical zoom.

However the zoom is not smooth, with video visibly jerking up and down as the internal lens extends and retracts (its especially noticeable if the subject is still). Panasonic put a record or pause button both on the front right of the camcorder (handy when using an overhand grip shooting at a low angle) and at the natural thumb position at the back for an underhand grip. Youd better keep a good grip on the SW20, though, because the included hand strap while cleverly making use of the tripod threads in the bottom is far from secure. Not great for its active use purpose.

Samsung SGH A777

In most respects the SGH-A777 doesnt strike new ground in cell phone design. It offers a thin profile (4 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep), clean lines, and a sliding face that hides the alphanumeric keypad. Yet, unlike many of its silver Samsung counterparts, the SGH-A777 comes in red and blue versions. We reviewed the blue handset, but the features are the same on both models.

The SGH-A777 has an average weight for its size (3.4 ounces), but it has a solid, comfortable feeling in the hand, despite the plastic battery cover. The slider mechanism was sturdy, as well, but we didnt like that the handset lacks a firm thumb grip for opening the phone. Unless we pushed on it in just the right place, our finger kept slipping to the navigation controls. We had issues with the SGH-A777s navigation array.

The controls are tactile, but with just a toggle, a central OK button, and two soft keys on the front slider, there are far too few of them. We suppose such an arrangement has a minimalist appeal, but we dont like having to open the phone to access a clear key and the Talk and End or power buttons. The toggle and OK button are large, but the soft keys are a tad thin. The keypad buttons are spacious, but theyre completely flush and somewhat slick.

We could dial and text with relative ease, but we would have appreciated some tactile definition between the individual keys. As such, dialing by feel is difficult. The bright backlighting helps in dim situations. On the right spine youll find the microSD card slot, a music player key, and a control that opens a pop up shortcut on the home screen. The toggle also gives one touch access to user defined functions.

A volume rocker and a proprietary headset jack or charger port sit on the left spine. The display measures 2 inches and supports 262,000 colors (220x176 pixels). Its a bit small for the phones size but is serviceable in most respects. Colors are bright, and graphics and photos are sharp. You also can save MP3 files and voice clips as ringtones. You can change the brightness, the backlighting time, and dialing font size, type and color. The menus are available in grid or list styles.

Samsung Q2

Available in black or white, Samsung Q2 looks slick, but it wont win any body battles against the nano its 3.9 by 2.0 by 0.4 inch (HWD) frame is considerably bulkier than the skinny iPod. That said, Samsung Q2 sports a larger screen, measuring 2.4 inches with a 320 by 240 pixel resolution. (The nanos 2 inch screen boasts the same resolution, so it looks a bit sharper.) Below the screen is the now familiar array of Samsung touch sensitive controls when powered up, a central button is flanked by Up, Down, Left, and Right arrows for menu navigation, as well as a backward navigation control and a button that pulls up submenus.

The controls are lightning fast and reliable unlike many touch screens and touch sensitive buttons out there. The players right hand panel houses a Power, Hold, User, Record switch, the latter of which can be set to control various functions like photo zooming. The lower panel features a headphone jack and the connector for PC syncing, the back panel houses a mic for voice recording, and the top panel has a lanyard loop. Included in the box are better than average earbuds (if only because the foam covers assure they stay in place), a manual, and a proprietary to USB cable to connect the player to your computer.

Suspiciously absent is a CD with file conversion software typically players with limited video format support like the Samsung P3 include one. Speaking of file support : for video, the Q2 plays only WMV and MPEG-4 files. Audio support is also limited to MP3, WMA, OGG, and FLAC, but at least the last two will please fans of lossless compression. Its still a bummer not to see AAC support like the P3 offers especially now that Apple has removed all DRM from its iTunes AAC offerings. The player accepts several photo file types including JPEG, BMP, GIF, and PNG.

The aforementioned earbuds are not nearly as poor as most bundled pairs. They stay in place pretty well, offer some bass response, and dont distort at high volumes. Could your listening experience be improved by swapping them out for Ultimate Ears US$50 MetroFi 170? Absolutely, but if you combine the Samsung earbuds with the user definable EQ (which also has standard presets like "Rock" and "Classical"), the listening experience on the Q2 isnt bad.

As always, Samsung includes some special effects, like "Audio Upscaler" and "Street Mode." My advice is to leave them alone theyre merely boosting some frequencies and cutting others, and rarely do anything useful to the sound. When music is playing, you can choose to view album art or flashy and trippy screensaver animations that, despite being gimmicky, look cool.

RIM BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

The Pearl Flip sports the new BlackBerry OS 4.6, same basic build as the new BlackBerry Bold. The most obvious improvement about the OS is the new wire frame default aesthetic theme. Though nice, the real benefits of the new OS lay elsewhere, though. Sheet To GoA quick jaunt to the Applications folder reveals a full suite of Microsoft Office like applications, known as DataViz Documents To Go.

The suite comprised of Word To Go, Sheet to Go, and Slideshow to Go is essentially mobile versions of their desktop counterparts which allow you to view, edit, save, and share documents of their respective types. For most users, being able to edit and resend an incoming document will be all the functionality youll need, especially given the Pearl Flips smaller screen.

However, if you want to create new documents and access more advanced editing options, youll need the upgraded premium version, which costs $70.

As a bonus, this version comes with the PDF To Go viewer. The Pearl Flip also features a voice recorder and video recorder, in addition to the standard memo pad, task list, calculator, calendar, voice dialing, and password keeper.

Continuing through the Applications folder, you are treated to a selection of games.

The old standby, Brick Breaker, gets some aesthetic makeovers, but remains largely unchanged and largely unbeatable beyond the 30th level (amateur).

To enhance your leisure time or procrastination experience is Word Mole, an interactive search game, Texas HoldEm, Sudoku, Klondike Solitaire, and Typer Trooper, which makes learning to type as much fun as it was in junior high. The call quality on the Pearl Flip was consistently satisfactory. A nice feature that this device incorporates is the ability to enhance the call quality by adjusting or enhancing the bass and treble during calls.

The users selection will be saved and applied to subsequent calls. While making calls over Wi-Fi, the calls seemed to have a slightly higher quality it seemed easier to hear the other caller. Callers reported the device delivered good, consistent, clear sound quality as well. The in call features such as conferencing etc. are arranged differently than in other BlackBerrys, so there is a little bit of re-learning for you power users to do, though nothing too distracting.

HP Photosmart A636

The A636 has the same small print kiosk form of its predecessor. The exterior is still matte black with a glossy output tray that folds down to reveal four media card slots (CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SD or MMC, xD) and a PictBridge USB port. The only aesthetic difference between the A626 and the A636 is the faceplate, which is now light gray instead of blue.

Standing at 5.2 inches tall, 9.9 inches wide, and 4.6 inches deep, the printer takes up very little real estate on a table, and all the trays including the screen, conveniently fold up into the body for clean storage. Conversely, popping open the output tray also releases the rear paper input door and the 4.8 inch color touch screen, our favorite feature on the printer.

Other printers like the Canon Selphy dye sublimation printer use hard navigation buttons surrounding the display to access features, but the A636s touch screen and stylus work much better for direct photo editing. When youre not using the stylus, you can either slide it back into the slot or prop it up on a quill style holder if youre not completely finished editing.

A small door on the front of the printer folds down to reveal the single HP tri-color inkjet print cartridge, and the rear mounted input tray can hold 20 sheets of photo paper in a variety of sizes including 4x6 inch, 5x7 inch, and all the way up to 4x12 inch panoramas. HP sells its compatible photo paper on the HP Web site in a variety of sizes for any application.

The A636 also has the potential to become completely mobile and self sufficient if you purchase a few additional wireless accessories including an external battery pack, Metro Style Carrying Case, and Bluetooth dongle. The printer already has a built in handle, which folds down and out of the way when the printer is stationary, for comfortable transportation.

While other printers require an external disc full of drivers and superfluous software, the Photosmart A636 has all the necessary installation files already preloaded onto the device we were able to set up our unit in less than 2 minutes by simply plugging the printer into our Windows XP desktop the printer did the rest. After a few minutes, the hardware completed its installation and HPs Photosmart Essential Software automatically loaded to indicate a successful install.

Dell XPS M1330 126B

One of the few competitors to the MacBook is Dells 13 inch XPS 1330, which we first saw in the spring of 2007. The system hasnt had a serious overhaul since then, but this fixed configuration retail model, the $1,149 1330-126B, offers a decent mix of components and features for just north of the $1K mark, along with more than three hours of battery life. Its still hard to beat the best selling 13 inch MacBook, but XPS 1330 at least offers a stylish Windows only alternative.

Specification
  • Price as reviewed $1,149
  • Processor 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250
  • Memory 4GB, 667MHz DDR2
  • Hard drive 320GB 5,400rpm
  • Chipset Intel GM965
  • Graphics Intel GMA X3100 (integrated)
  • Operating System Windows Vista Premium (64-bit)
  • Dimensions (WxH) 12.5x9.4
  • Dimensions (Thickness) .87-1.4 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 13.3 inches
  • System weight / Weight with AC adapter 4.5 / 5.2 pounds
  • Category Thin and light
Physically identical to the first XPS 1330 we looked at last year, the system is slightly wedge shaped, going from 0.87 inches in the front to 1.4 inches in the rear. It also manages to come in about a pound less than the Apple MacBook. The brushed metal keyboard tray has touch sensitive controls for volume and media playback, an eject button for the slot loading DVD drive, and a quick launch button for Dells proprietary Media Direct software.

Well repeat the complaint we made in the original 1330 review the tiny, 2.75 inch touch pad is too small, especially given that theres plenty of room on the wrist rest for a bigger pad. With a 1280x800 pixel native resolution, the same as on the 13 inch MacBook or a lower end 15 inch system, you get the decent mix of screen real estate and readability.

This version, however, does not have the LED backlit display you can get as a $125 option when you use Dells online configurator. The LED screen is slightly thinner, lighter, and better for battery life, but the trade off is that theres only room for a VGA quality Webcam, instead of the 2 megapixel model built into the standard display.

Smartphone HTC Explorer HTC Pico

Samsung Epix

Despite the similarity, the Epix is not being marketed as a successor to the Samsung BlackJack and BlackJack II models. And for good reason a lot of that look is skin deep. The most obvious difference is that the Epix has a touchscreen, and runs the more complex Windows Mobile Pro version of the platform more on this later.

It also looks black in the publicity photos, which led me to be surprised when I opened up the box and found that its actually a hematite grey, like a glossy version of the color sported by the Samsung Ace. If you dont know what hematite looks like, think dark silver. Its a good look, being attractive but still businesslike. Its a little fingerprint prone, but not so much that it becomes a distraction.

Its pretty hard to please about fingerprints, but the Epix does better than my relatively smudgable BlackJack II.

Speaking of deceptive photos, the first impression that people tend to get from looking at them is that the Epix is monstrously thick (an impression bolstered by online peanut gallery commentators with more opinions than facts).

But thats not really the case. The Epix measures out at just 0.51 inches thick, substantially less than the similarly specced AT&T Tilt and the same as the Palm Treo Pro.

Both of those other devices, notably, have a smaller battery than the Epix. The Samsung Epix is also known as the SGH-i907. Unfortunately this leads to confusion with the i900, also known as the Omnia. Although they share similar specs, the two devices are quite distinct in design. The Epix is actually based on the design of the Samsung i780, a device offered overseas, but its not an exact copy of that, either. The Epix is thicker to accommodate a much larger battery than the i780, and sports some other minor tweaks.

Because of its design and feature set, the Epix invites comparison to the Palm Treo Pro. Both devices have a similar form factor, GSM, Wi-Fi, and GPS. While I havent had the opportunity to use the Treo Pro itself, on the face of it the Treo has several advantages over the Epix. It has a classic directional pad instead of the slightly more experimental optical mouse a built in 3.5 mm headphone jack without the need for an adapter and a slightly less cramped app button layout.

To get these things, though, you have to trade off the 624 MHz processor in the Epix for the 400 MHz one in the Treo, as well as losing some of that exceptional battery capacity, 1800 mAh versus 1500 mAh. Theres also one last hands down victory for the Epix price. The GSM version of the Treo Pro runs $550, while the Epix is rated at $200 with a new contract or extension. This is a bit of an unfair comparison, of course, because the Treo is sold unlocked and without contract, but the bottom line is that youre just not going to get a cheap Treo Pro, while the Epix is available at a heavy discount to a lot of people.

Toshiba Satellite Pro U400 S1001X

The Satellite Pro U400-S1001X will fit into any business environment, with its dull silver lid and keyboard deck, black screen bezel, and black keyboard. It uses the same chassis as the consumer oriented Satellite U405, but removes the multimedia control keys above the keyboard and the glossy Fusion finish. Branding is kept to a minimum, with a simple Toshiba logo on the center of the lid, another smaller Toshiba logo below the screen, and a tiny Satellite Pro logo on the front left corner. Despite its lack of dedicated multimedia control keys, an always appreciated volume dial resides along the front edge between a media card slot and Wi-Fi power switch.

Specification
  • Price as reviewed / Starting price $1,049
  • Processor 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
  • Memory 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
  • Hard drive 160GB, 5400rpm
  • Chipset Mobile Intel 965GM Express
  • Graphics Intel GMA X3100
  • Operating system Windows XP Pro
  • Dimensions (width by depth) 12.4x9.0 inches
  • Thickness 1.2 to 1.4 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 13.3 inches
  • System weight and weight with AC adapter 4.6 / 5.5 pounds
  • Category Thin and light
Like the first Satellite Pro laptop we reviewed, the 15-inch A210, the 13 inch U400 feels very solid, from the two sturdy hinges that anchor the display to the firm keyboard deck. The keys themselves offer good travel, and even a heavy handed typist like myself didnt feel much flex when banging away on the keys. Im also known to be driven slightly insane by a laptops loud mouse buttons (Im looking at you Sony Vaio NR498), so I experienced something akin to what might be described as euphoria when I first encountered the U400s mouse buttons.

OK, euphoria might be overstating it a bit, but the fact remains that the mouse keys offer excellent feel with just the right amount of travel and a barely audible click when fully pressed. Between the two mouse buttons is a fingerprint scanner. The touch pad is a compact 2.5 inches by 1.5 inches and, sadly, it lacks the vertical scroll function that many have come to rely on, including myself.

The 13.3 inch display offers a 1,280x800 pixel native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size. We were surprised to find the same glossy screen coating as found on its consumer cousin, the Satellite U405. For business use working under bright fluorescent lights or in a sun filled airport gate we generally prefer a screen with a matte finish, which reduces glare and reflections.

Above the display sits a 1.3 megapixel Webcam and mic for easy video conferencing. We generally have low expectations for laptop speakers and lower those for the audio output of business laptops. Yet, the Satellite Pro U400 fell short of our meager expectations, with the tinniest and weakest audio output. For both music and movies, youll want to make use of the laptops headphone jack.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-S1001X serves up a standard collection of ports and connections similar to what we saw on the Satellite U405 but minus an eSATA port. Theres a placeholder on the left edge for an HDMI port, but it sits empty on this business machine; your only video out option is the analog VGA port.
